Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP):

KAP is a deep psychotherapeutic process that often produces rapid improvement, the treatment process is sometimes referred to as a “journey”.  It provides a “time out” from the ordinary aspects of life’s routines. It reduces negativity, and provides an expansion of understanding, including a greater sense of self.

Ketamine’s antidepressant effect stems from its antagonism of NMDA receptors within the Glutamate neurotransmitter matrix. It is FDA approved as an anesthetic and analgesic. In lower doses, it produces dissociative qualities helpful in facilitating distance from self, and parts of self, to enable access to one’s inner intelligence and wisdom.

It is effective in reducing symptoms of depression, and PTSD. It requires a comprehensive and careful medical evaluation, and a preparation process for the treatment. As an ‘off label’ treatment, the medicine is a conduit for awakening insight and healing. The therapist’s role as a KAP therapist and guide, is an honor that calls for sensitivity, compassion, and the assurance of safety and comfort for the client. Principles of Harm Reduction are essential to the process.

“Integration” is an essential aspect of KAP. This is the process of reviewing the session, generating further insight and understanding, with curiosity and self compassion. A more complete description of KAP is included in the consent.
